Am I right in thinking that Ford having to sell off Jag/Land Rover is the greatest thing to happen to them in a long time?

yea, pretty much. though to be fair, ford has also really upped their game, so maybe that F-type would have been around sooner.

One could say the same for Mazda.

And Volvo

Note to companies: If you wanna be successful, have Ford buy you, nearly run you to the ground, and be sold off. You'll start making the best cars you've ever made.

To Ford? Or to JagLR?
Because yes.

Since the '60's that is. If you consider the E-Type to be one of the best Jaaaaaags.

Well it's titled Jaguar so...

It's undeniably beautiful, but in every other aspect, the F-Type kills it. And it's close in the looks department.

Lincoln.

Well you're comparing two cars made nearly 50 years apart. But I see what you're saying here. And I agree. Having driven neither. The E-Type is just one sexy car. Same goes for the F-Type.

I'm of the lagging indicator opinion, with Jag/LR, Volvo, and Mazda. Made a lot of missteps up front with each of those firms, but they had finally gotten the right people in place and started making better decisions right as the liquidity crunch hit and they had to offload them.
I think there have been many benefits to each firm from being independent, but the late-term of Ford's ownership is what gave them the footing to get where they are today.

What's interesting is that they both seem to be better off...

Except for Volvo—I'd say some of their 50s-60s models are relatively better than their current ones.
